How this Tasmanian estimate is calculated

Tasmanian ATARs are produced from TCE pre-tertiary / Level 3–4 results. Eligible combinations and scaling differ from mainland systems.

Results are unofficial estimates generated by Hayzum. They are not produced by a tertiary admissions centre.

Actual ATARs change with cohort performance, scaling, and eligibility rules that are recalculated every year.

Always verify with the official authority for your state or territory before relying on a figure for applications.

• Enter pre-tertiary results on a 0–100 scale.
• The best results are combined into an illustrative aggregate.

Tasmania runs its ATAR through the university itself!

This Tasmania ATAR calculator reflects a setup that's genuinely unusual compared with the rest of the country. In every other state, a dedicated body like UAC or QTAC issues the ATAR. In Tasmania, the University of Tasmania itself acts as the Tertiary Admissions Centre, while TASC, the Office of Tasmanian Assessment, Standards and Certification, handles the technical side of the calculation and issues your ATAR Statement. It's a smaller, more direct pipeline than what you'll find interstate, and it's worth knowing who's actually behind the number before you start relying on one.

Qualifying on your TCE comes first

Before any TAS ATAR calculator, including this one, can give you a useful number, you need to actually be eligible to receive one. Tasmania's ATAR requirements sit on top of your TCE, the Tasmanian Certificate of Education. To qualify for an ATAR, you need to meet the standard for your TCE and achieve a Satisfactory Achievement or better in at least four TASC Level 3 or Level 4 courses, or an equivalent combination that includes High Achiever Program or University Connections Program units. Year 11 students aren't issued an ATAR at all; it only becomes available once you've completed Year 12 or 13.

The rule around which results count has just changed

This is genuinely worth knowing if you're partway through senior secondary study, because Tasmania's approach to picking which results feed into your ATAR shifted for 2025 onwards. Previously, three of your four best results had to come from your final year of study. Under the updated rule, your ATAR is calculated from the best three results in your final year, combined with your two best results from that same year or from one other year across your senior secondary studies. In effect, this gives you a bit more flexibility to draw on a strong result from an earlier year rather than being locked into using only your final-year performance for every course counted.

Turning course scores into a Tertiary Entrance Score

Once your eligible courses are identified, each one is given a course score through a scaling process, adjusting for differences in difficulty and cohort performance across subjects, in much the same spirit as scaling works in other states. These scaled course scores are then combined to produce what Tasmania calls a Tertiary Entrance Score, or TE Score, which sits underneath your eventual ATAR the same way an aggregate does in other states.

HAP and UCP courses, university-level units some senior secondary students take alongside their regular TCE studies, can also contribute here, typically weighted according to how much of a full course they represent. This is a genuinely useful option for students in a state with a smaller pool of subject offerings than somewhere like NSW or Victoria.

From TE Score to your actual ATAR

Your TE Score isn't the final figure. It's converted into your ATAR by comparing it against the results of every other eligible Tasmanian student that year. The ATAR itself is calculated the same way nationally, so a Tasmanian ATAR of 85 means exactly the same thing as an 85 issued anywhere else in Australia. What differs is simply the size of the cohort your result is measured against, since Tasmania's Year 12 population is considerably smaller than a state like NSW or Queensland, which is worth keeping in mind if you're comparing notes with friends interstate.

Applying to university with your Tasmanian ATAR

For University of Tasmania courses, your application runs through the same body that calculated your ATAR in the first place, which tends to make the process a bit more streamlined than in states with a separate admissions centre. Published entry requirements are set per course and can shift depending on demand each year, so a previous intake's figure is a reasonable guide rather than a locked-in target. If you're applying interstate instead, that university's own Tertiary Admissions Centre will manage your application, and your ATAR carries across exactly as issued, since it's calculated on a consistent national scale regardless of which state awarded it.

How much can an estimate really tell you

Because your final TE Score and ATAR both depend on how the entire eligible Tasmanian cohort performed that year, and because that data isn't available until every student's results are confirmed, any Tasmania ATAR estimate produced beforehand, including from this calculator, is necessarily an approximation. Where a tool like this earns its keep is helping you track roughly where your current course results sit and flagging areas worth focusing on, rather than promising a number you can bank on ahead of your official result.

ATAR Calculator Tasmania FAQs

Do I automatically get an ATAR if I finish Year 12 in Tasmania?

No. You need to meet the TCE standard and achieve a Satisfactory Achievement or better in at least four TASC Level 3 or 4 courses, or an approved HAP or UCP equivalent. Year 11 students aren't eligible for an ATAR regardless of results.

What changed with the 2025 ATAR calculation update?

Previously, three of your best four results needed to come from your final year of study. From 2025, your ATAR uses your best three results from your final year plus your two best results from that year or one other year across your senior secondary schooling, giving you more flexibility in which results count.

Who actually issues my official Tasmanian ATAR?

The University of Tasmania, acting as Tasmania's Tertiary Admissions Centre, sets the requirements and determines eligibility, while TASC supports the technical calculation and issues your ATAR Statement.

Do HAP or UCP courses count towards my ATAR?

Yes, if they meet the relevant criteria. These university-level courses are scaled and contribute to your Tertiary Entrance Score, typically weighted according to how much of a full course they represent.

Is a Tasmanian ATAR worth less than an ATAR from a bigger state?

No. The ATAR is calculated the same way across the whole country, so an ATAR issued in Tasmania carries exactly the same value at any Australian university as one issued in NSW, Victoria, or anywhere else.

Can I get a reasonable ATAR estimate before my final results are out?

Yes, using predicted or practice course scores gives you a workable estimate. It won't match your official ATAR exactly, since the conversion depends on statewide data that's only finalised once every eligible student's results are confirmed for the year.
